Created & written by Kayin Queeley

How was such a small island so impactful? Written through a personal lens, Sugar City: untold stories of white gold, explores four major themes that reminds us of our connection to the land and each other. The production weaves story telling, movement, media, video and imagery to share the history of the introduction of the sugarcane plant to St.Kitts and its global impacts in the 17th and 18th centuries to the present. The project will share elements of St.Kitts' deep and complex history as one of the first British Colonies and major exporters of sugar.

Writer & Performer

Kayin is a proud Kittitian born and raised in the twin island federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. His home provided a rich environment for reflection, curiosity and learning. After leaving St.Kitts to pursue his undergraduate and master's degrees in New York, he explored artistic and educational spaces that nurtured and cultivated his talents as a writer, educator, storytelling and choreographer.

Kayin has written and produced several original productions that explore Black diasporic life and resilience in Canada in the afterlife of slavery. He co-developed a stepping course - The Art of Stepping- Black Theory and Movement which he has taught at the National Theatre School of Canada since 2021.

Sephora N’Kosi (she/they) finds it hard to be contained within the jumble of a 100-word bio. She dances under many hats — such as queer, congolese, poet, designer and manager — but never ceases to prioritize kindness and openness in her work. In her studies at the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) for Production Design and Technical Arts, she encourages visceral and honest stories through her writing and designs. At 17, she earned her first Dora Mavor Award nomination with Théâtre Français de Toronto, before going on to write two poetry books the following year. Based in Toronto, she graduated from NTS in May of 2026 and stands to expand her practice primarily in Lighting Design, Production Management, and Stage Management while also continuing to write poems.
